Benjamin Moore’s 2017 Color of the Year — Shadow 2117-30 — is a rich, royal amethyst. “It’s elegant, welcoming and serene,” says Glenda Anderson of Details International, Inc. “This color sends the energy of clarity of mind and introspection along with a meditative spirit.”

Homeworks Construction’s Marshall Hickox says the color of the year is a perfect fit for many of his projects. “I love to design with strong neutral colors that fall in the gray spectrum such as nova-blue limestone flooring, countertops with ash or any gray elements, and cabinet doors with driftwood gray undertones,” he says. “This shadow has a beautiful undertone that will complement those grays subtly while the purple hues emanate an opulence allowing this color to stand on its own.”

Every year, Benjamin Moore forecasts color trends by attending major industry shows around the world and also taking cues from standouts in architecture, fashion, textiles, home furnishings and the arts. This year, fine art emerged as a leading inspiration, highlighting the correlation between an artist’s use of color and light to create mood.

“I used a very similar color in my entry and up my staircase,” Anderson says. “It would be great for a yoga room or retreat. I would pair it with a soft sage green or seafoam.”
