When this busy family of three came to kitchen designer Jessica Omoto of Homeowners Design Center, one thing was apparent: It was time for a change. “The original, 1980s kitchen just wasn’t adequate,” says Omoto. “It needed to allow more room for entertaining, cooking and just day-to-day living. There just wasn’t enough space.”

One thing that didn’t have to change was the kitchen’s prime location in the home, which makes it a natural hub for this busy family. “It is central to the home,” says Omoto, who has been with Homeowners Design Center for 13 years. “It’s definitely a gathering place.”

Led by Omoto, the professionals at Homeowners Design Center got to work. To keep things aesthetically pleasing, Homeowners Design Center followed the existing shape of the soffit over the peninsula to expand the kitchen’s overall footprint. This also opened up space for Omoto’s favorite feature of the remodel:  a 48-in. refrigerator. “Originally, we didn’t think we were going to be able to fit a fridge like that into our available space, but we managed to get it in there,” she says. “The husband couldn’t be happier. He really wanted a larger fridge.”

Other upgrades included new lighting, cabinets and updated appliances throughout. Finally, the cooking area was also moved to the opposite wall, making it more of a focal point on the angled wall. “The space was similar to how it is now, but we made several changes,” Omoto says. “It was functional before, but I would say the remodeled kitchen is definitely better with all the updates.”

The homeowners couldn’t be more pleased with the final result. “They are happy with how it all turned out because it’s more spacious and functional,” she says. “It’s a better gathering place where people can be in the kitchen and at the peninsula.”
