CORAL HOUSE LEI INSTALLATION

Philpotts Interiors
Anne Tanaka, Marion Philpotts-Miller

Grand Overall Award
Award of Excellence – Custom Design Installation

This entryway art installation was inspired by the Hawaiian lei, a symbol of hospitality and affection. Inspired by nostalgic lei stands, this unique art installation is comprised of five strands with over 300 plumeria flowers, suspended beneath 10-foot ceilings and displayed within a stone niche. Skilled artisans hand-crafted each flower. No two flowers are the same, reflecting the natural diversity found in nature.

COASTAL MEETS POIPU

Studio Shaolin
Shaolin Low, Ashley Fonseca, Kara Fath

Award of Honor – Residential: Single Space

For the design team, this project was a fun chance to design an entire home for a young family who plans to relocate to Hawaii in the future. The formal living room, with its stunning pink terrazzo fireplace, became the focal point and the team’s absolute favorite room in the house. With the fireplace as the main muse, the space was pulled together with matching sofas, a green volcanic ash coffee table, and a pair of Palecek chairs. Styling the enormous flanking bookshelves and bringing some flair to the hallway behind with custom art pieces rounded out the design.

CORAL HOUSE

Philpotts Interiors
Marion Philpotts-Miller, Anne Tanaka

Award of Excellence – Residential: Sustainability

The serene coastal backdrop of this home provides a strong connection with nature and livability. It is here where Coral House embraces sustainability while supporting active lifestyles in a beautiful contemporary envelope. The overall craftsmanship of millwork and key furniture pieces utilizing indigenous woods showed stewardship of sustainable practices. Cultural heritage inspired artful design elements such as the intricate motifs of kapa pattern reimagined in the geometric stone flooring layout, and purposefully integrated in the custom vanity and furniture pieces capturing a Hawaiian sense of place.

Award of Merit – Student: Commercial

Generated from passive design strategies and the comprehensive study of sun and wind path movements, this structure maximizes environmental efficiency through its conservation of warmth and utilization of a greywater recycling system throughout its facilities. The stairwell and aperture locations create a venturi effect, allowing adequate air circulation while minimizing cold breezes and ensuring occupant comfort. By implementing local materials such as basalt lava rock, oak wood, larch wood, and granite, the building exemplifies vernacular architecture.

The house was updated with a new window package, also adding in windows to the kitchen to optimize its view. MAKALII RESIDENCE

Yvette Crosby and Company
Yvette H. Crosby

Award of Honor – Residential: Mid-Size Residence

This project honors the client’s request to create a stylish but casual beach home that provides comfort and ease for multigenerational family living. The client was specific about wanting a mix of contemporary and classic style with lots of white and bright light for indoor-outdoor living. The design concept created a breezy Island look with modern lines and personal touches — relaxed, yet refined. The home has an open floor plan with an ocean view lanai wrapping around a central courtyard to offer more outdoor living. The bedroom suites are all on different levels with outdoor access, allowing the design team to expand the living space in each.

MAKENA DINING ROOM

Yvette Crosby and Company
Yvette H. Crosby

Award of Honor – Residential: Single Space

Vivid blues and purples in the bar/dining area were requested by the client. Everything required an artistic bend to it — not just a simple table or chair, but one with modern style and structure. Along with sticking to the client’s desired color palette, comfort and flow were the main focus of the design. Conception began with incorporating color into a modern European interior defined by clean lines with a high-end element. Because the bar was the focal point, a blue ombré tile mosaic was designed to encase the curved counter, creating a virtual art piece in contrast to the kitchen.

MAKENA OFFICE

Yvette H. Crosby

Award of Honor – Residential: Single Space

This space was transformed with a contemporary artistic design in soft, feminine colors. The client requested a versatile space that could serve as an office, library, sitting area, and cycling storage area while still looking clean, modern and feminine. The design concept aimed to balance an intimate space with adequate storage for outdoor items. The goal was to create a space for the client’s bike without it becoming the central focus of the space. The house is full of modern art and bold colors — the design team endeavored to duplicate that look in a pale palette while still maintaining the modernity of the Maui home.

PAPALI RESIDENCE

Yvette Crosby and Company
Yvette H. Crosby

Award of Honor – Residential: Model Home/Condo

In this project, the client was downsizing from a large high-end custom home to a small pre-built condominium. A collector of Asian antiques and modern art, the client was not willing to downsize the art nor the custom-made furniture pieces. For the design team, it was important to convey an architectural feel fitting for modern art while still allowing the Asian antiques to shine. The art inspired the colors chosen and the furnishings sourced. The design team wanted to allow the art to be staged without losing the feeling of grandeur from the previous space. It was also essential to stylize the materials and surfaces reflecting a modern Asian aesthetic.

PORTLOCK RESIDENCE

Tantalus Studio
Ginger Lunt, Amy Vicente, Jodie Emerson

Award of Honor – Residential: Large Residence

The design team was hired to transform a young family’s oceanfront home from a previously heavy and dark interior to a much lighter and minimalist aesthetic. Through a complete overhaul of the interior finishes, millwork, lighting and furniture, the home has become a beautiful blend of warm yet restrained, and informal yet sophisticated spaces. The palette of honed limestones and travertines, subtle plaster, and wire brushed oak and teak wood tones conjures a feeling of calm and cohesiveness throughout the home. Clean lines and silhouettes in both the custom millwork and furniture designs, paired with light fabrics and touches of organic weaves and fibers, create a harmonious palette.

Award of Excellence – Residential: Mid-Size Residence

This Maui home was completely transformed with a gut renovation, focusing on modern elegance with a beach vibe. The bespoke staircase, crafted in Europe, serves as an architectural focal point. With ocean-inspired materials like mother-of-pearl and explosion blue quartzite, the home exudes a casual yet sophisticated feel. Chevron patterns and locally sourced art unify the design, creating a serene, functional space that fulfills the client’s dream of a perfect Island retreat.

SOLIDARITY: SACRED HEARTS ACADEMY GYMNASIUM RENOVATION

Chaminade University Environmental + Interior Design
Katherine Liu

Award of Excellence – Student: Commercial

Inspired by the students of Sacred Hearts Academy, this design concept revolves around solidarity. As a Catholic, all-girls institution that fosters the growth of young minds and spirits, shared experiences developed alongside love for God’s compassion ultimately build connection through camaraderie and trust. This is exemplified through a bold color palette drawn from school colors paired with natural finishes that stimulate balance and enthusiasm. Multi-use spaces with ample storage and modular furniture further support students and staff. Natural light and organic forms delineate spaces for an uplifting environment.

Award of Excellence – Commercial: Restaurant/Bar

WALEA BY SALON GLITTER

Muse Design Interiors
Janine Shinoki-Evans, Charlotte Geimer

Award of Excellence – Commercial: Best Value

The salon was designed into raw space, which necessitated integrating a new building standard storefront and all surface finishes. A cost-conscious design approach was paramount to the salon’s opening without sacrifice to the ambience of a distinctive modern salon being rebranded and located in the thoughtfully detailed ‘A‘ali‘i complex. To achieve this light, airy, warm and fresh yet intimate salon experience, the cold shell itself became a significant design feature. The broad expanse of the demising walls, coupled with the monolithic concrete floor color along with the exposed concrete floor above, were the driving design elements along with the salon furniture, lighting and lighting reflections.
