BE A GREEN THUMB
Spruce up your backyard! The 30-acre Oahu Urban Garden Center in Pearl City hosts Second Saturday at the Garden to help community members develop green thumbs. The workshops are led by University of Hawaii master gardeners — nationally recognized, trained horticulturists — and volunteers, and feature a different topic each month. Don’t forget to visit the “Got a Plant Question?” booth for one-on-one advice. Workshops are $5; proceeds go toward the garden center. Seeds and plants are also for sale, as well as garden tours.

BE A CULINARY MASTER
Throwing parties is fun. Cooking for your guests, on the other hand, can be stressful. Let the professionals at the University of Hawaii Kapiolani Community College culinary program make you a more confident home chef. These non-credit, continuing-education courses are as diverse as your culinary aspirations, from chicken dishes, pies, vegetarian dishes, Middle Eastern and Mexican cuisine, to the ins and outs of kombucha. Your friends will want to have dinner at your house every night. Most classes cost $80.
BE YOUR OWN DECORATOR
Sure, you could buy a bigger jewelry box for the new baubles your family just gave you, or search online for a surf rack. Or, you could do it yourself. Let the folks at Re-Use Hawaii show you how. These monthly instructive workshops include everything from the materials and safety equipment you’ll need for each project to personal instruction on how to do the projects. Plus, feel confident in knowing you’re using local, repurposed materials. This month’s class is a jewelry box and February is a wine rack (May is the surf rack).
Call 537-2228 for details and to register; each workshop is $20.
