These Honolulu homeowners had a simple request for their master bathroom renovation: It needed to be both functional and stylish. They put their trust in seasoned kitchen and bath designer J.R. Ludlow of INspiration Interiors Design Studio to guide them through the process.

“The couple had very specific needs, like more functional storage, better lighting and more space in the master shower,” says Ludlow. “Simply put, they wanted their bathrooms updated to match their own design style.”

The renovation was extensive, including two full bathrooms, a powder room and laundry room, and Ludlow helped her clients conceptualize the finishes and space planning by creating detailed 3D renderings to help them visualize what the rooms would look like. The ability to virtually walk through each space and experience the layout before construction began was crucial in the decision-making process.

Constrained by the condo’s fixed plumbing and limited square footage, Ludlow’s team focused on giving the couple greater space in the master shower with a curbless design, a new bench for seating, and niche for product storage.

Ludlow’s favorite elements are the quartz countertops and niche details. The material is Daltile’s ONE Quartz in Almondine. It has a lot of depth and a beautiful range of sea green with charcoal gray accents, creating a pop of color and texture in the space.

While the drains and water supply locations remained unchanged, the footprint of the shower and tub in the master bath was expanded, taking advantage of previously unused space. “Because we could not change the square footage, we changed how each area functioned, giving the family a proper, well-appointed master bath,” says Ludlow.

The same tile and countertop material was selected for both full bathroom renovations, with different matte lacquer finishes for the cabinets and paint colors on the walls. The new powder room was further distinguished with full-height glass mosaic tile.

Today, the homeowners are pleased with their updated bathrooms, especially the master bath. Says the homeowner, “We enjoyed working with J.R. [Ludlow]. We are very hands-on with our projects — we would give J.R. our ideas and she would respond with her interpretation and ideas until we all felt that we had a really good result. We like to think that it was a great team effort.”
