Ohana Building Q&A
Q: What are ADU models and why are they a popular aging-in-place option?
A: Accessory Dwelling Units allow qualifying homeowners to add a detached dwelling to their property. They are advantageous for multigenerational customers looking to build a small home for aging parents or for older customers who want to build a small home on property for themselves and give the main house to their children.
Q: What are the requirements to qualify for ADU house packages?
A: Hardware Hawaii’s Hale Ohana collection offers 14 house packages, five of which meet ADU requirements. A qualifying property must be at least 3,500 square feet and cannot be within a planned community development or part of an association. The size of the ADU is dependent upon property size, with owners of lots between 3,500 and 4,999 square feet able to build up to a 400-square-foot unit, and lots over 5,000 square feet able to build up to an 800-square-foot dwelling.
